What is an American Mahjong mat?

An American Mahjong mat is a square table cover made for the way the game is played: four players, a lot of shuffling, and tiles moving across the table all night. It gives everyone a smooth, defined playing area, softens the clack of the tiles and helps protect the tabletop underneath. Ours pair that practical job with original artwork, so the mat looks as good on the table as the game feels.

Why play on a Mahjong mat?

Tiles glide more easily over a smooth printed polyester surface than over bare wood or glass, and the non-slip rubber base keeps the mat in place while you wash the tiles and build the wall. A mat also marks out the playing space, so racks, cards and snacks have a natural place to go. When the game is over, it rolls up and goes into the black storage bag included with every mat.

Which size Mahjong mat do I need?

Every design comes in three square sizes. 33" x 33" gives the fullest coverage on a standard square card table. 31.5" x 31.5" leaves a little more of the table edge showing and suits slightly smaller tables. 20" x 20" is the compact option and the easiest to carry and store. Measure your tabletop before you order and pick the size that leaves comfortable room for racks at each side.

2 mm vs 3 mm: which thickness should I choose?

Both thicknesses use the same printed polyester top and rubber base. A 3 mm mat has a little more cushion under the tiles, which many players like for a softer, quieter feel. A 2 mm mat is lighter and rolls up more compactly for travel and storage.
